Whichever radio I get, I think I would like to take it with me on my various outdoor excursions such as hiking, camping, mountain biking, etc. Mainly I just want to get the radio to start tinkering and see if I like being a part of the amateur community. I'm not extremely concerned about EMCOMM or ARES/RACES type stuff at this point. I've narrowed it down to two HTs for my first radio. I don't typically like to buy the cheapest/crappiest thing available (read: the Baofeng radio from the GD thread) so I started doing my own research and stopped into a local ham radio shop. ![]() I've been kicking around the idea for several years, but the UV-B5 thread in GD inspired me to go ahead and take action. I'm making my foray into amateur radio this month.
